Anise Hyssop -Agastache foeniculum |
Anise hyssop is a stately well-behaved perennial herb. It grows 3 - 6' high, depending on how you treat it and if it likes the soil you plant it in. Start the seeds indoors (they require light, do not cover) in spring and transplant the seedlings when all danger of frost has passed. Early on you will notice the licorice scent the tiny plants give off when the leaves are gently rubbed. Bees love anise hyssop and will congregate in your garden to gather pollen. |

Calendula - Calendula officinalis |
Calendula is an easy flower to grow. It has a lower germination as a rule, hence the huge quantity of seeds in the packets. In mid May sow the seeds 1/4" deep, they should germinate in 1 to 2 weeks. Calendula, an annual grows about 2 1/2 ' high and usually has yellow, orange or cream colored flowers. Calendula petals are used in many herbal preparations. Add them to mint and lemon verbena for a lovely facial steam bath. |

Elecampagne - Inula helenium |
Elecampagne is not a herb for the timid. It is a large leafed individual with small yellow daisy-like flowers. The plants reach about 8' high and need to be kept moist. I mulch mine at their base, and it helps. They have a huge root system which makes transplanting difficult, even in their 2nd year. Why plant elecampagne? It is an interesting foliage plant, the roots can be dried and used as a fixative in potpourri, and you will have the herb Helen of Troy was reputed to be collecting when she was abducted for the Trojan Horse - reason enough? Start the seeds indoors as they require light to germinate - and should do so in 7 to 10 days. |

Hyssop - Hyssopus officinalis |
Hyssop is a fascinating herb. Try rubbing your hand along the plant when it is growing and you may recognize the scent of a skunk! When hyssop is dried, it smells pleasant and wonderful....It is startling to realize it is the same plant. Start hyssop indoors, cover the seed, as it requires darkness to germinate (5 - 21 days). A package contains predominately blue hyssop. It will grow up to a compact 2' high, a shrubby perennial. In the language of herbs, Hyssop means cleansing. |

Mugwort - Artemisia vulgaris |
An ancient herb is mugwort, used by herbalists for centuries. The seeds requires stratification and then light to germinate. They usually take 2 - 3 weeks to germinate. It is a striking perennial herb, perfect for a moon garden, wonderful for wreaths and an all round magical herb. Mugwort will grow to be 5 - 6 ' high (I've had it grow 8') and will 100% for sure, without a doubt self seed in your garden. It is highly invasive and one might keep that in mind when deciding on it's location in your garden. As long as you dead head when it is flowering |

Xeranthemum - Xeranthemum annum |
Ah! Winged everlasting and Immortelle, two of xeranthemum's nicknames. These tough (purple, white and pink) annual flowers are easy and rewarding to grow. Wait until the soil has warmed up in the spring and seed shallowly, cover lightly with soil, keep moist and voila! The seeds will sprout in 10 - 15 days. The flowers will last a very long time in a fresh bouquet. You may also cut them when they have just opened, hang them upside down in small bunches to dry, and enjoy them all year. They will not open further when cut, they stay as is, and the color stays vibrant for a long period of time without fading. |
