Frequently Asked Questions
- What are smudges?
-
Sage is gathered from our pastures and wrapped by itself or with purification herbs and tied with cotton threads.
After it is wrapped it is then called a smudge, a smudge stick or a smudge wand.
Note: I offer traditional single sages - pasture, prairie or white sages by themselves. For a wiccan twist
I add purification herbs - lavender, juniper, cedar or rosemary to the sage as I wrap them. When I add all of the above, it is
a deluxe blend.
- Why are smudges used?
-
Sage Smudges are used to help provide focus when praying , giving thanks or when meditating.
- How are smudges used?
-
The tips of the Smudge sticks are lit with matches or with a lighter and allowed to smolder. It is the 'smoke' which is used to waft
around the person, the home, the sacred space or the area needing to be purified. Loose sage is used in much the same way but is
burnt on wood coals or charcoal discs. Many thanks to First Nations groups in the Americas for starting the tradition of smudging on
this continent.
